Adult ADHD-Autism Assessments in Newport News

And Virtual Through All of VA

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism (autism spectrum disorder, ASD) are two conditions that can have a significant impact on an individual’s daily life. Both conditions can make it difficult for people to focus, communicate effectively, and interact with others, which can lead to feelings of frustration and isolation. However, with proper assessment and treatment, Autistic and/or ADHD adults can learn to manage their symptoms and lead fulfilling lives.

Assessing Symptoms: The First Step in Managing ADHD and Autism

One of the first steps in managing ADHD and Autism, particularly in the context of Understanding ADHD and Understanding Autism, is to seek a proper clinical assessment. A trained professional, such as a doctor, psychiatrist, therapist or counselor, can help to identify the specific symptoms and challenges that an individual is facing.

This assessment process can include a variety of tools and techniques, such as interviews, questionnaires, and observations, to gather information about the individual’s behavior, cognition, and emotional well-being. These assessments are crucial in understanding and managing these conditions effectively.

The Assessment Itself

Developed by Lindley Cherry, LCMHC, QS, NCC, the Cherry Adult ADHD-Autism Diagnostic Interview is a clinical assessment method designed specifically for identifying ADHD, autism, and co-occurring presentations (AuDHD) in adults.

Key Features

  • Adult-Centered Approach: Unlike tools designed for children and adapted for adults, the Cherry AADI was created specifically for adult presentations, accounting for developmental masking, compensatory strategies, and life experience factors.
  • Culturally Responsive: Incorporates systematic consideration of cultural, gender, and identity factors that influence neurodivergent presentation and recognition.
  • Strengths-Based: Emphasizes individual neurological profiles and environmental fit rather than deficit-focused assessment.
  • Comprehensive Scope: Addresses not only core diagnostic criteria but also masking behaviors, sensory processing differences, and pathological demand avoidance patterns.

Additional Information

  • Fee covers the time taken for assessment interview, all additional time spent completing documentation or related tasks, and follow-up session.
  • A thorough review of your information is cross-examined with common misdiagnoses then compared to DSM-5 diagnostic criteria.
  • A comprehensive diagnostic report based on the data acquired during the assessment process is completed and a copy provided to you.
  • The wait time for the diagnostic report ranges from only 2 – 4 weeks.
  • At the follow-up session, your provider will discuss their findings and provide a copy of the assessment for you to review and approve.

Prepare for the Assessment

Make sure you have a safe, quiet, and private location for the assessment. It is also helpful to have a stable internet connection for the virtual visit. Be comfortable and have anything that makes you feel good (snacks, water, etc.)

The Assessment

The comprehensive assessment is 3-hours long or 1.5 hours long over two days. Your therapist will be asking a lot of questions but don't worry, there are no wrong answers. Just be honest, even if the answer is "I don't know".

Follow-Up

We will schedule a time for a 30-minute virtual visit where the therapist will review the findings, present your document, and answer any follow-up questions you may have. This typically occurs around 2-4 weeks after the assessment is completed.

Frequently Asked Questions About The Assessment

If you don't find the answer you are looking for, feel free to book a consultation to ask me directly.

  • Can anyone get an assessment?

To be considered for this assessment you must be 21+. If the individual has never lived on their own, this specific assessment can be challenging because much of the criteria for adults is related to independent living. Outside of that, this assessment is useful for adults regardless of gender, cultural background, ethnicity, or socioeconomic standing.

  • Do I need to stop seeing my current therapist?

Not at all. We’ll coordinate with your primary therapist to let them know our findings if that is something you would like.

  • Does insurance cover this assessment?

This assessment unfortunately is not covered by insurance nor is it reimbursible in most cases. The deposit of $150 is due at the time you schedule the appointment and is non-refundable. The remaining balance is due at the start of the assessment.

  • What can I do with the information from this assessment?

The findings of this assessment can be provided to a doctor for medication management, schools for accommodations, or use in disability cases. Some individuals just want this information for their own knowledge which is perfectly fine as well. When you meet with the therapist, they will go over who the report is going to and will review the findings with you prior to releasing the document.

  • What if I need to reschedule?

Your deposit holds your appointment. You can reschedule the appointment with 24-hours notice. If you do not cancel or reschedule the appointment and do not show up, you forefit the deposit unless it is an emergency situation (car accident, death in the immediate family, etc.). If you notify us with more than 24-hours notice, we will be happy to reschedule your appointment.

  • Do you offer assessments for children?

We do not offer assessments for children. The assessment used is specifically designed for adults and is not applicable or transferrable to children.
